Nature & Hiking

On January 6 and 7 the Veluwe turned white overnight. Thick snow on familiar forest, bent pine branches, heath erased under a plain of white. Rare, and very quiet.

Walking in that snow woke everything up: muffled sound, footsteps crunching, cold clear air. A good day to walk slower and look longer.

We followed tracks in the fresh snow. Prints of red deer, wild boar and fox showed where they had gone—paths you rarely see. With luck we even found where a roe deer had lain.

Tip: After such a fresh winter walk, we found it lovely to come back to our warm holiday home. We turned on the heating or fireplace, made a large mug of hot chocolate (with whipped cream!) and enjoyed the rosy cheeks and the beautiful pictures we had taken.
